"Without cell-to-cell communication there's no multicellular existence."

"Electrome" is a novel term for the totality of all ionic currents of any living entity, from the cellular to the holistic organism-level.  Cellular electricity is truly vital & now we're discovering -- uniquely personal. (As in the instance of a woman being resuscitated after cardiac arrest and in-animation for 6+ hours w/an ECMO* & electrome** reading showing EEG background moving toward symmetry – w/both sides of the brain being in harmonious synchrony:  providing similar signals.)

Death of any cell ensues at the very moment it irreversibly (excluding regeneration) loses its ability to realize its electrical dimension.

The second mechanism involves communication activity invariably executed by sender-receiver cell entities incessantly handling flowing information w/no accountable mass.  Information itself is immaterial (= no mass).  Both mechanisms are instrumental to the functioning of all cells, in particular to the highly enigmatic cognitive memory system (in which Ionic/electrical currents play a key role).

Your personal electrical (electrome) profile is represented by the voltage gradient overlayed on the plasma membrane and the ability of your cells to drive --- at least during part of the cell cycle --- a self-generated electric current --- entirely through themselves.

This process requires energy delivered by the mitochondria (M). With ion channels allowing the passage of a particular ion(s) down its gradient. This is a passive process; ion pumps are enzymes transporting an ion against its concentration gradient. And, these membrane potentials result mainly from the interplay between ion pumps and channels.

In unstimulated (resting cells) the cytoplasmic side of the plasma membrane is at negative potential.  The second (epigenetic aspect) features the two memory systems, the genetic/epigenetic one which is well understood, and the cognitive one which remains highly enigmatic ---- as it does not call for energy use.

*Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Machine (ECMO)

When connected to a patient, the Ecmo takes over the functioning of the heart and lungs, oxygenating the blood outside the body then reintroducing it, allowing both organs to rest. Once the brain signals via the introduction of oxygen -- the electronome is prepared (and body temperature had risen sufficiently) -- the cardiac arrest could be "reversed" using a defibrillator.  In fact, EEG background asymmetry (as a measure of electrome) – w/one side of the brain being much less active than the other or giving different signals –  has routinely shown poor ECMO outcomes, even after adjustment for cardiac arrest and overall suppression were made.

** Your electrome is the data gathered from your brain, ANS, vagal/cranial, and peripheral nervous system(s) to inform our understanding of consciousness, mood, awareness, pain management - existence!

"Ancient mechanism of sharing information between cells using the conductance of ions across cell membranes & electrical signals through tissue space is rapidly becoming more understood as a powerful means of efficiently controlling cell decisions & ultimately multi-dimensions of behaviors."   --R.Eady.

Besides the little brain in the heart. . .  SHANEL tech is helping us see the heart, brain, ANS very clearly, in real time.  To monitor and gauge these "touch situations.

Pretty nifty, eh?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTi6A19WzxU

On the artistic heart awareness side:  how's this for an admission ticket?

Drawing on sounds recorded in thermal baths around Budapest and the contribution of heartbeats from people attending the piece, Salima Punjani created a space that invites rest and collective healing through the interconnectedness of our heartbeats.

It is an experience that bridges the individual and public ritual of bathing, reminding us how being in a relationship contributes to well-being.
