International Association of CyberPsychology, Training, and Rehabilitation
Hello iACToR members,
There are only a few days left to apply for the 2012 NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) themed "Invisible Wounds: New Tools to Enhance Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Diagnosis and Treatment." (IW2012). The Interactive Media Institute and the Virtual Reality Medical Institute invite you to submit your application to be a participant at this event. Application submission deadline is February 15, 2012!
FREE REGISTRATION will be provided to the first 50 applicants accepted to this 10-day intensive training experience convened to provide international clinicians, psychologists and postdoctoral researchers focused learning and application of the latest advances in assessment, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related comorbid disorders in military populations.
IW2012 Description
The organizers and attendees of the NATO-funded "Wounds of War" advanced research workshop series realized the need for IW2012 due to the increased rates of PTSD in combat veterans and survivors of armed conflict. Exposure to traumatic events have led to this increased risk of PTSD and often, the serious consequences of this disorder lead to impulsive and destructive behavior such as drug abuse, uncontrollable anger, and even suicide. Combat-related PTSD is one of the strongest factors that contribute to high suicide risk in returning troops. IW2012 disseminates knowledge and skills among attendees fostering collaboration to help counter this aforementioned internal threat to our countries' security. In comparison to a traditional conference, IW2012 allows for greater collaboration among established and emerging research leaders in the field of PTSD, and provides presentation of this unique material in depth. IW2012 will afford participants solid grounding in the latest PTSD research; review of the latest science related to theoretical constructs and associated neuroscience; and presentation of the latest psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for intervention, treatment, and management of the disorder. Submit your application today to take part in this important educational event!

The Interactive Media Institute, in collaboration with the Virtual Reality Medical Institute, is pleased to announce the first Call for Papers for the International Association of CyberPsychology, Training, & Rehabilitation’s (iACToR) 17th Annual Conference. The CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference (CYBER17) is scheduled for September 25-28, 2012 in Brussels, Belgium.
CYBER17 brings together researchers, clinicians, funders and policymakers to share and discuss trends in healthcare and technology. CYBER17 continues to seek input from a wider segment of the scientific community, and is interested in attracting experts in clinical therapy and rehabilitation, cognitive sciences, social sciences, and computer sciences dedicated to meeting the conference's core topic: experiencing the future of health & well-being.
CYBER17's focus areas include:
1. The Impact of Technologies as Tools
CYBER17 will continue its examination of the exciting applications of advanced technologies being used in training, therapy, rehabilitation, and education for the improvement of the quality and availability of healthcare for people around the globe.

Facebook Isn't Addictive - It Just Makes People Happy
Huffington Post - A lot has been written about "Facebook addiction." Indeed some press coverage of a recent study from the University of Chicago suggests that "Facebook and Twitter are more addictive than cigarettes or alcohol." But a new study published in the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking puts a positive spin on the issue. Could it be that, just like eating chocolate, Facebook and Twitter are simply fun and pleasurable? The word "addictive" doesn't appear once in the report, "Why Is Facebook So Successful? Psychophysiological Measures Describe a Core Flow State While Using Facebook," (PDF) but it does point out that " the successful spread of SNSs (social networking services) might be associated with a specific positive affective state experienced by users when they use their SNSs account." Virtual Therapists Being Developed to Treat Depression
CBCNews - Scientists at a U.S. university are developing new technologies to treat depression and other disorders - including a mood-detecting smart phone that will call to check up on you. The researchers at Northwestern University in Chicago say the new inventions could allow patients to bypass traditional weekly therapy sessions, and offer immediate support and accessibility to a much larger population. "These new approaches could offer fundamentally new treatment options to people who are unable to access traditional services or who are uncomfortable with standard psychotherapy," said psychologist David Mohr, director of the new Center for Behavioral Intervention Technologies and a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern's Feinberg School. "They also can be offered at significantly lower costs, which makes them more viable in an era of limited resources," Mohr said. To read more, please visit http://bit.ly/xTg04b.
