International Association of CyberPsychology, Training, and Rehabilitation

Opening Statement

Hello iACToR members,

iACToR members and attendees of the recent 16th Annual CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference: Evidence-Based Clinical Application of Information Technology (CYBER16), which was held on June 19-22, 2011 in Gatineau, Canada, were exposed to an exciting research project currently taking place in Europe. The INTERSTRESS project, or Interreality in the Management and Treatment of Stress-related Disorders, funded under the European Commission’s FP7 Program, showcased their work to the international audience at CYBER16.

Headed by Istituto Auxologico Italiano, Milan, Italy, INTERSTRESS aims to design, develop and test an advanced ICT-based solution for the assessment and treatment of psychological stress. To achieve this goal, the objectives of this project include quantitative and objective assessment of symptoms using biosensors and behavioral analysis, decision support for treatment planning through data fusion and detection algorithms, and provision of warnings and motivating feedback to improve compliance and long-term outcome.

For more information on the INTERSTRESS project, please visit their website at http://www.interstress.eu/.

Search Engines 'Rewire Our Memory'
The Telegraph - A study from Columbia University suggests that the ability to find almost any information via a few keystrokes on Google could make us less likely to remember things. Researchers believe that we tend to forget information if we are confident that we can find it again. If we think that something will not be easy to find again then we make more effort to remember it. Betsy Sparrow, the psychologist who carried out the research, said: “Our brains rely on the internet for memory in much the same way they rely on the memory of a friend, family member or co-worker. We remember less through knowing information itself than by knowing where the information can be found.” To read more, please visit http://tgr.ph/p4glyl.

Cognitive Engineering in Mental Health Computing
Journal of CyberTherapy & Rehabilitation - Mental disorders make up a large amount of the global burden of disease, with an estimation of 14% attributed to neuropsychiatric disorders, and 28% of non-communicable diseases (Prince et al., 2007). Computer support in the diagnosis, care or rehabilitation of these disorders is increasing, motivated by the improvement of effectiveness or more efficient use of healthcare resources. Computer support in prevention programs to make individuals more resilient against mental stress and enhance their overall mental wellness is also receiving research attention. Considerable attention has been devoted to studying the efficacy of some of these systems, and some attention is now being given to the use of these technologies, for example, in a recent special issue in the Interacting with Computers journal (Doherty & Bickmore, 2010). As has been recognized in areas such as consumer electronics and office applications, the interplay between technology and humans is an important factor in determining the use and acceptance of technology. Researchers Expose Cunning Online Tracking Service That Can’t Be Dodged
Wired - Researchers at U.C. Berkeley have discovered that some of the net’s most popular sites are using a tracking service that can’t be evaded — even when users block cookies, turn off storage in Flash, or use browsers’ “incognito” functions. The discovery of KISSmetrics tracking techniques comes as federal regulators, browser makers, privacy activists and ad tracking companies are trying to define what tracking actually is. The FTC called on browser makers to add a “Do Not Track” setting that essentially lets users tell websites not to leave them alone — though it doesn’t block tracking on its own. It’s more like a “privacy, please” sign on a hotel door. One of the big questions surrounding Do Not Track is about web analytics software, which sites use to determine what’s popular on their site, how many unique visitors a site has a month, where users are coming from, and what pages they leave from.
